THE SPACE RACE
In the late 1950's, the former USSR and USA launched into an unspoken 'space race'. Fueled by curiosity and the other's achievements in 'conquering the unkown', the Soviet Union and USA constantly sought to better one another's advancements. Russia had a head start in the race, launching many 'firsts' to which the USA responded with the Apollo 11 mission. The effective end of the space race was reached when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to land on the moon.
FUN FACT: NASA was created in response to Soviet Union's launch of the satellite Sputnik- the first space venture of either of the countries.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES:
Seeing as the USA 'got off on the wrong foot', President John Kennedy's claim that the USA would be the first to land a man on the moon seemed to be a desperate cry. However, 8 years later the president's claim was fulfilled when on July 20th, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. This leads many people to suspect whether the whole moon landing was sham.
Conspiracy theories begun to unearth themselves shortly after the moon landing. Where they came from, it is hard to tell but it is likely that the USSR was hard at work trying to disprove Neil Armstrong's moon landing. Through all of the different proposals, there are a few theories that stand out amongst the others.
The vacuum theory:
Scientists state the the atmosphere on the moon is like that of a vacuum- there is no movement of air or wind. How does this disprove the moon landings? In the photograph of Neil Armstrong on the moon with the flag, the flag is clearly upright and looks as though it is blowing in the wind. To counter this argument NASA says that Armstrong was putting the flagpole into the Earth and thus stimulating movement of the flag however in the photograph his hands are off the flagpole...hmmm....
Hollywood:
Conspirators state that the whole moon landing was filmed in Hollywood studios. Did they have the technology to stage such an event? Apparently they did as the movie 1968 film: 2001 A Space Odyssey displays very similar imagery and a surprisingly realistic set.
Shadows:
The moon's surface reflects light therefore it is a light source in itself. Some argue that the images should not contain a shadow because the light is coming from beneath them. As you can see in the photo above there is a clear shadow of Buzz. A clear opposition to this is the face that the sun is another source of light. So should the sun or the moon have the higher power in this argument?
Conspiracy theories are prevalent in many ordeals, the USSR's space ventures probably have their own associated conspiracies. There is an opposing argument to each of the above theories. There is nobody that can know for sure, and if there is, they could be hiding something.
